Treatment for heart conditions may include medication, medical and interventional procedures, such as stents and heart surgery, and cardiac rehabilitation, which are all available at Memorial Hospital. Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) is a procedure in which a small balloon is inserted to the point of blockage and inflated to improve the blood flow. In most cases, balloon angioplasty is performed in combination with the stenting procedure.

A stent is a small, metal mesh tube that acts as a scaffold to provide support inside the coronary artery. A balloon catheter, placed over a guide wire, is used to insert the stent into the narrowed artery.

Once in place, the balloon is inflated and the stent expands to the size of the artery and holds it open. The balloon is deflated and removed, and the stent stays in place permanently. During a period of several weeks, the artery heals around the stent. In this way, restenosis is somewhat diminished.

Angioplasty with stenting is most commonly recommended for patients who have a blockage in one or two coronary arteries. If there are blockages in more than two coronary arteries, coronary artery bypass graft surgery may be recommended.

Impella Temporary Cardiac Assist Device

For patients requiring high-risk percutaneous intervention, Memorial is also using the Impella temporary cardiac assist device to take over some of the work of the heart’s ventricle when needed.

By helping the ventricles pump blood - easing the workload of the heart in patients with heart failure - these heart pumps are saving lives. The Impella works by “pushing” blood from the left ventricle to the ascending aorta, which is the main blood vessel leaving the left ventricle.

It is designed to provide a patient's failing heart with full circulatory assistance while allowing the heart to rest and heal.
