Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
At Memorial Hospital, we are prepared for the unexpected when you're expecting. The Birthplace is dedicated to creating a comfortable, joyous experience, but should the need arise, the only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on the Mississippi Coast is available at Memorial for sick infants and newborns.
The Memorial Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cares for sick infants and newborns in Gulfport and surrounding communities. The only unit on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Memorial NICU is staffed by board certified neonatologists. We help give premature babies and babies with other diseases the special care they need. Located on the seventh floor of Memorial Hospital, the NICU is divided into three areas - intensive care, intermediate care and isolation. The NICU was recently revamped and features 23 beds in 11 semi-private rooms.
Our Neonatal Transport Team provides quick and efficient inter-hospital ground transfer for acutely ill or potentially unstable infants to the neonatal intensive care unit at Memorial. The specialized transport team consists of trained nurses and respiratory therapists with neonatal and pediatric experience. An integral part of the team is the neonatologist who activates the transport team and supervises care during the transport.
The Neonatal Developmental Follow-up Program is offered at Memorial for the many premature infants requiring close follow-up after discharge. A nurse, physical therapist and neonatologist see the infant. Complex medical conditions are reviewed and developmental milestones are noted. The clinic follows the high-risk neonatal patient from birth to age two and is available with physician referral for the patient with developmental delays, growth delays or those who may have experienced problems due to prematurity, or other problems.
Our developmental service provides a program of diagnostic, therapeutic, and supportive treatment for children with developmental disabilities. Our team evaluates infants and children at high risk for developmental delays. The service is designed to enhance the care provided by the infant's pediatrician.
