Memorial Hospital Foundation Announces Burdonne Young Scholarship Recipients

GULFPORT, Miss. —The Memorial Hospital Foundation has announced the winners of the 2018 Burdonne Young Scholarships. The scholarships are named in honor of the late Burdonne Young, former nurse for Memorial for more than 50 years. These scholarships are awarded annually to dependents of Memorial employees who will be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at a college or university in the Fall of 2018 or are currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student.

Memorial Hospital Foundation selects six candidates to receive the Burdonne Young Scholarships. The scholarships are made possible by Memorial employees who donated funds through the Foundation Employee Campaign to the Burdonne Young Scholarship Fund. Since 2001, 78 students have been awarded a total of $45,000 in scholarships from this fund. 

Thank you to those who have made it possible for the following six students to move forward in their education:

Reece P. Bowen is the daughter of Kristi Bowen, Patient Financial Services. Reece attended D’Iberville High School where she attained a 3.98 GPA and scored a 29 on the ACT. She plans to attend William Carey University in Hattiesburg in the Fall majoring in Biology/Chemistry – Pre- Med. 

Jaden Jones is the daughter of Victoria Jones, Emergency Services. Jaden attended Harrison Central High School where she attained a 3.8 GPA and scored a 28 on the ACT. She plans to attend MGCCC Perkinston in the Fall majoring in Pre-Nursing. 

Brennan T. Ladner is the son of Laura Ladner, Emergency Services. Brennan attended Long Beach High School where he attained a 3.8 GPA and scored a 34 on the ACT. He plans to attend Mississippi State University in the Fall majoring in Mechanical Engineering.  

Elaine Morrow is the daughter of Kathleen Morrow, Cardiovascular Informatics. Elaine attended Gulfport High School where she attained a 3.99 GPA and scored a 34 on the ACT. She plans to attend the University of Mississippi in the Fall majoring in Chemistry/Biology/Pre-Dentistry.

Nickolas Murray is the son of Lynn Murray, MPC Family Practice Physicians. Nickolas attended Pearl River Central High School where he attained a 4.0 GPA and scored a 25 on the ACT. He plans to attend Pearl River Community College in the Fall majoring in Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia.  

Avion Swanier is the daughter of Susie Swanier, MPC Internal Medicine Physicians. Avion attended MGCCC and attained a 3.84 GPA. She’s currently attending the University of Mississippi Medical Center majoring in Nursing. She also scored a 22 on her ACT.
