Diagnosis and Treatment

Successful cancer care requires innovative tools, advanced treatments and a skilled staff. A diagnosis of cancer today comes with a strong probability of recovery. In fact, nearly half of the cancers treated today are cured through surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a combination of treatments.

Early detection of cancer increases the probability of recovery. Memorial Cancer Center employs the latest tools, including digital mammography and PET/CT, and procedures to detect and diagnose cancer in its early stages, when it is most curable.

Chemotherapy is the use of medication to treat disease, specifically cancer. Customized chemotherapy and medications can help patients fight their cancer in a curative or palliative manner. While most chemotherapy is delivered intravenously, depending on what type of cancer a patient is diagnosed with, there are oral therapies that are also available. For patients requiring intravenous therapy, our Outpatient Infusion Clinic is designed for total patient comfort with a warm and friendly staff, recliners, retractable individual curtain partitions and individual televisions with headsets.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy particles to kill cancer cells. We offer the highly advanced CyberKnifeÆ Robotic Radiosurgery and Varian TrueBeamô radiation accelerator, as well as the innovative High Dose Rate Brachytherapy to treat a variety of cancer tumor locations.

Cancer surgery has been used to diagnose, treat and even help prevent cancer. A groundbreaking alternative to both conventional open surgery and traditional laparoscopy is Memorial's da VinciÆ Si HDô Robotic Surgical System, which uses high-tech instruments to perform intricate operations through very small incisions. Advantages include less chance of blood loss and complications, less pain, less scarring and faster healing.

Lymphedema Therapy is a specialized form of physical / occupational therapy that focuses on patients with cancers and treatments to the lymph nodes. While primarily oriented to the breast cancer patient, lymphedema therapy can be used for other cancer types, as well. Memorialís Cancer Center has the only Certified Lymphedema Therapist in the Gulf Coast region.
