Positron Emission Tomography (PET) plus anatomical information acquired from Computed Tomography (CT) equals an incredibly clear, totally non-invasive look at what is going on inside your body. PET/CT offers highly defined, 3-D images generated by two scanners fused into one.
This diagnostic tool used to accurately diagnose and identify cancer, heart disease and brain disorders is available at Memorial Diagnostic Imaging. This is a major step forward in diagnostic imaging technology. According to the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, in a study of 204 oncology patients, PET/CT provided additional information, not provided by the separate interpretation of PET or CT alone, in 49% of the cases.
PET/CT is a whole-body imaging procedure used to detect and monitor most cancers, including lung, colorectal, lymphoma and breast, and is used in the diagnosis of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's.
Since January 2002, Memorial has been performing PET/CT utilizing a mobile unit, which limited the scheduling of patients to certain days a week. Memorial now offers patients the only fixed PET/CT unit on the Coast. This in-house unit allows appointments to be scheduled five days a week.
